Dear FH Collins Community,
Here are some updates about the start of this school year since my last email:
Planning
·         The Guidelines for K-12 School Settings were released on July 23 and we are using those to continue planning for the 2020-2021 school year.
·         We are working closely with Porter Creek and Vanier to ensure that the three schools operate similarly to each other.
·         We are developing our finalized Health and Safety Operational Plan, which will be shared with you on or before August 12.
School Calendar
·         A Professional Development (PD) Day has been moved from October 1 to August 19 to give staff an extra day to prepare. Therefore the first day of school for all students
will now be Thursday, August 20.
·         We will be providing a grade 8 orientation at the Wood St campus. More details will follow.
School Schedule
·         The grade 8/9 and 10-12 daily period bell schedule was provided in a previous email.
·         A year-long calendar specifying which days are Day 1’s and Day 2’s will be available before the school year starts.
·         Teachers will use a blended learning model using either Microsoft Teams or Google Classrooms to facilitate learning time when students are not in classrooms.
·         For students in grades 10-12 in semester 1, students’ shift assignment will be based on surname:
o    Surnames starting with A through L will be in the morning
o    Surnames starting with M through Z will be in the afternoon
o    We will do our absolute best to try to accommodate individual requests, but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to satisfy all requests.
Student Timetables
·         We have started mailing out timetables: the grade 8 and 9 schedules have been put in the mail. Senior high schedules will be mailed out by the end of this week.
·         Our student information system (based in British Columbia where school doesn’t start until after Labour Day) goes off-line for summer maintenance from August 8th until the 17th.  We will not be able to make any schedule changes during this time.
School Supplies and Lockers
·         School supply lists were sent out last week and are also posted on our website.
·         As previously stated, students will not be issued lockers this year.
Please feel free to email me with questions- Jay.Thomas@gov.yk.ca.
Thanks,
Jay
