The Academy of Indigenous Studies

Picture
The Academy of Indigenous Studies is a 20-credit program for grade 10 FH Collins School students. The program encompasses a vision for student success and learning that allows students to learn through experience, activity and the land. While a broad focus on the Yukon Indigenous culture is examined, students will experience a more holistic approach to learning through local Yukon culture.  Students will participate in authentic, hands-on Indigenous activities aimed at enriching their understanding of the local culture while making a positive contribution to the community. Students will also have opportunity to examine leadership and actively participate in leadership activities throughout the school and community. This is a unique and innovative opportunity for students to gain a greater sense of how their interaction with local Indigenous culture has an effect on future generations of Yukoners.

Examples of activities in 2021-2022:
·The class went out to a fish camp at Fish lake to listen to an Elder speak about his experience in the residential school system. The students also learned to use an Atlatl and ended the day with traditional hand games
·Students learned to skin a beaver in the classroom and the value of what a beaver offers
·Drum making activity
·Beading and sewing activities
·Chain saw certification
·Day canoe excursion

For all interested in joining the academy next year please complete the following form and submit it to Jodi.tuton@yukon.ca
